Into the Ring
I just came back from this season's premiere of "Die Walkure" conducted by Mr. Lorin Maazel. It was wonderful! James Morris as Wotan (King of the Gods, shown below) was also pretty good I thought. I like bass in general.. "Die Walkure" is the second part of Wagner's "The Ring of the Nibelung / Der Ring des Nibelungen" that is constituted with four operas. The famous, most listened piece would be Ride of the Valkyries from Act III.
"Lohengrin" was my first experience of Wagner's operas... So you can tell how I am still learning the gems of Wagner scores. The stage design by Robert Wilson just struck my heart... Ah I wish I could have seen the performance again!
And then I also tried "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg" which is the only comedy among Wagner's operas and one of the lengthiest operas, 5 hrs 50 mins.. I remember such fulfilling feeling lasted even after I got home although I totally forgot how I could find the way home afterwards.
Of course, I won't miss another Wagner opera "Tristen und Isolde" coming up in March!
