Show of the month(s)
Shoot, I notice that nothing has been posted since a month ago.. Well, in fact, I was looking for some interesting art exhibits/events here in NYC I might have wanted to post but most of them weren't so impressive except the Jasper Johns: Gray show at the Metropolitan Museum (ended on May 4) and the installation of Jason Rhoades as part of the Whitney Biennale (on view on the first floor till June 1. I always like his work with laundry detergent..) Sorry no photos of these shows mentioned. One exhibition I very much enjoyed was SANAA: Works 1998-2008 in the lobby and the first floor galleries at New Museum.
It was a mini retrospective of the Japanese architecture firm Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa/ SANAA feturing their projects in 10 years like a private house to more recent, highly acclaimed museum buildings. Not limited to their building designs, we can chill at the tables and Rabbit chairs that they have designed and already being part of the museum's cafe/lobby.
"Often referrered to as an architect's architect, SANAA has avoided a signature style while embrasing qualities of light, tranparency and openness." (quoted from the museum's text) Although it's almost invisible in the photos, there is a glass wall between the cafe and the gallery space and apparently it blurs the boundary.. If you feel like lazy & just want to watch people & some artsy display, you can do so while sitting and sipping espresso in the cafe section. When you are in the gallery space, you can still see through the glass wall what people are actually doing in their designed-building and with furniture. Very interactive and free-spirited.. Do not miss this tender experience.. The show runs through June 15!
